Partition Remembrance: PM Modi Remembers Partition Victims on Remembrance Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered those affected by Partition, honouring their courage and resilience while urging people to preserve harmony and work together for India’s progress.

Partition Remembrance: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remembered the people who suffered during the Partition of India, saying the division left deep wounds that affected countless families.
His remarks came on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, observed in India every year on August 14, a day before Independence Day. The central government has been observing the occasion since 2021 to remember those who lost their lives during the violence and mass displacement that followed Partition.
Modi paid tribute to the people who faced the difficult period and later managed to rebuild their lives. He said many families were separated and numerous people lost loved ones during the turmoil.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the strength shown by those who lived through the crisis. Despite the hardships they faced, many victims and survivors started their lives again and contributed to the country’s development.
Partition resulted in one of the largest movements of people in the region’s history. Millions were forced to leave their homes as communities moved across newly created borders. The period was also marked by widespread violence and loss of life.
For many families, the consequences did not end with migration. They had to rebuild their homes, livelihoods and communities after leaving behind places where they had spent generations.
Remembering those experiences, Modi said the resilience of the affected people continues to offer a lesson for the present generation. Their ability to overcome difficult circumstances and move forward remains an important part of the country’s history.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining social harmony and brotherhood. According to Modi, remembering the painful chapters of the past should encourage people to work together rather than allow divisions to grow.
The government introduced Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in 2021. The occasion focuses on remembering those who died and suffered during the violence and displacement associated with the 1947 Partition.
The observance takes place each year on August 14, bringing attention to the personal stories behind an event that changed millions of lives.
Modi said the experiences of Partition victims should inspire citizens to contribute collectively to the country’s future. He linked their resilience with the broader goal of building a developed India.
The Prime Minister’s message also placed emphasis on unity. While the memories of Partition remain painful for many families, he said the courage shown by survivors can serve as an example of how people can overcome adversity.
As India prepares to celebrate another Independence Day, the remembrance offers an opportunity to reflect on both the freedom achieved in 1947 and the enormous human cost associated with the division of the country.
The stories of those who lost homes, relatives and livelihoods remain an important part of India’s history. Remembering them, Modi said, can help strengthen the values of harmony, togetherness and collective progress.
