Air India Flight Incident: Air India Pilot Under Scrutiny After Flight Loses 300 Feet

Air India Flight Incident: An Air India flight travelling from Phuket to Delhi faced a serious incident on August 4 after suddenly losing around 300 feet in altitude. At least 20 passengers and four crew members were injured.

The AI 2379 flight was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members when the incident occurred. The aircraft eventually regained control and landed safely in Delhi.

According to an internal safety report, a stall warning was triggered during the flight. The first officer began recovery procedures after the autopilot disengaged. The aircraft then entered a severe negative G situation, briefly causing passengers, crew members and loose items to lift from their seats.

The captain was also reportedly thrown upward inside the cockpit before returning to his seat, securing himself and taking control. The thrust was increased to prevent further loss of speed and altitude, after which the aircraft was brought under control.

Engineering records reportedly showed unusual readings in the aircraft’s hydraulic systems following the incident. Low pressure was recorded in the green system first, followed by the blue and yellow systems. Investigators are examining whether a problem with the aircraft’s pitch control contributed to the sudden movement.

A passenger later made serious allegations about the captain’s condition before the flight. The passenger claimed that the pilot appeared intoxicated, responded slowly and had red eyes. These claims have not been independently established and remain part of the investigation.

The passenger also described the moment the aircraft dropped, saying there was a loud noise and that his brother was thrown against the ceiling several times. He claimed that injured passengers were calling for help after the incident.

Reports also said both pilots underwent tests for psychoactive substances following the incident. While the first officer reportedly received a clear result, sources cited in the report claimed that the captain failed two tests, with the second reportedly indicating cannabis use. Both pilots were said to have been removed from duty.

However, these claims have not been presented as a final finding. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is examining the aircraft, flight data, maintenance records, medical information and statements from people connected with the incident.

The Civil Aviation Ministry said investigators will review all available evidence beforecoming to any conclusion. The exact reason for the altitude loss, the role of the hydraulic systems and the allegations concerning the pilots are expected to become clearer once the investigation is completed.
