Rajahmundry Medical Student Priyanka Dies After Tragic Car Accident

Medical student Priyanka, who had been fighting for her life after a serious road accident in Rajahmundry, died on Sunday while undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad. Doctors confirmed that the 28 year old postgraduate student passed away at around 3.32 pm.

Priyanka was pursuing her first year postgraduate studies in Dermatology at GSL Medical College in Rajanagaram, East Godavari district. She had been critically injured in an accident on August 3 and was shifted to KIMS in Secunderabad on August 6 after her condition worsened.

The accident occurred after Priyanka and a fellow medical student left a cinema theatre in Rajahmundry on a two wheeler. According to the case details, a car allegedly being driven by two men under the influence of alcohol struck their vehicle near the theatre entrance.

The impact caused Priyanka to suffer severe head injuries. The car allegedly hit the victims again before running over Priyanka, leaving her critically injured. Despite intensive treatment and efforts by doctors, her condition continued to deteriorate and she eventually died after seven days of treatment.

Following her death, police changed the case to a murder offence. The incident was initially registered as a road accident involving serious injuries. Investigators later altered the charges based on the circumstances of the incident and the evidence collected during the investigation.

The accused have been identified as Suravarapu Dashwanth from Namavaram and Andrew Joseph Edwards from Lalacheruvu. Police are continuing their investigation into the accident and the circumstances surrounding Priyanka’s death.

Priyanka’s death has left her family, friends and fellow medical students deeply shocked. Her family members said she had hoped to become a doctor and serve people. She was reportedly the first doctor in her family.

Priyanka’s father Venkatesh said the family had continued hoping that she would recover. He said doctors informed them that her condition was worsening and that several organs were gradually being affected.

Venkatesh also said the family travelled to Rajahmundry to understand the progress of the investigation. After police explained the sections applied in the case, CCTV footage and other evidence, he said the family gained confidence in the investigation.

He alleged that the accused had no previous connection with his daughter and questioned how the vehicle was driven during the incident. He also demanded stronger laws and strict punishment in cases involving dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over Priyanka’s death and conveyed his condolences to her family. He directed officials to provide Rs 20 lakh financial assistance to the bereaved family and assured them of government support.

The Chief Minister also spoke with the East Godavari District Collector and Superintendent of Police through a teleconference. He directed officials to ensure that the accused face strict punishment according to law.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also expressed grief over the death of the medical student. He said it was deeply painful that Priyanka, who had a future ahead of her as a doctor, lost her life in such circumstances. He assured that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure strict action against those responsible.

Home Minister Anitha said the government was closely monitoring the case along with Minister Nara Lokesh and senior police officials. She also said she had spoken with Priyanka’s father over the phone and assured him that the government would stand by the family.

Priyanka’s family is now seeking justice as the police investigation continues. Her death has also renewed concerns over dangerous driving and the consequences of driving after consuming alcohol.
