India Makes Strong Start at Commonwealth Games With Lawn Bowls Wins
India began its Commonwealth Games campaign on a positive note as impressive performances in lawn bowls secured two opening day victories and boosted confidence for upcoming events.

India opened its Commonwealth Games campaign with an encouraging performance, registering two important victories in lawn bowls on the opening day of competition in Scotland.
The women’s pairs team of Roopa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh delivered a determined display to defeat Malta’s Rebecca and Kani Lee. After taking the opening set comfortably, the Indian pair faced a strong comeback from their opponents before holding their nerve in the tiebreak to seal the match.
India’s success continued in the men’s singles event, where Putul Sonowal produced one of the biggest upsets of the day. He overcame reigning world champion Ryan Bester of Canada after an intense contest that was decided in a tiebreak.
Sonowal claimed the first set by a narrow margin before Bester responded strongly to level the contest. The Indian athlete, however, regained control in the deciding tiebreak to complete a memorable victory over the highly rated Canadian.
The Indian women’s team will next face South Africa in their second league fixture as they look to maintain their winning momentum in the tournament.
India’s athletes will also be in action in other disciplines, including powerlifting and gymnastics, as the country’s contingent aims to build on its successful opening day at the Commonwealth Games.
