Sonam Wangchuk Ends Indefinite Hunger Strike After Talks With Union Ministers

Social activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk has ended his indefinite hunger strike after holding discussions with senior Union ministers late on Thursday. The development came after his health condition required continued medical attention.

Wangchuk had been admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after being shifted from Safdarjung Hospital as doctors monitored his health. His prolonged fast had entered its 26th day before it was officially called off.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh visited Wangchuk at the hospital and met him personally. According to sources, the meeting took place after consultations within the Central Government regarding the issues raised during his protest.

In the presence of the ministers and his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, Wangchuk ended his fast by taking his first sip of a drink offered to him. He expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout the protest and acknowledged his wife’s constant encouragement during the difficult period.

The activist’s protest had drawn nationwide attention, with supporters closely following developments and expressing concern over his health. His decision to conclude the fast followed assurances received during the discussions with government representatives.

The meeting marked an important step toward dialogue between the activist and the Centre, bringing an end to nearly four weeks of continuous fasting.
