A senior United States official confirmed that global IT services company Cognizant is among the organisations being examined as part of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities clarified that the investigation is based on whistleblower complaints and does not mean the company has been found guilty of any wrongdoing.
Speaking to Fox Business, United States Department of Labor Inspector General Anthony D Esposito said investigators have already issued dozens of subpoenas while examining allegations related to visa misuse and permanent residency sponsorships. He stated that the administration is working closely with the Fraud Task Force led by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance to verify every piece of evidence.
Officials also alleged that some visa related fraud schemes may extend beyond immigration violations. According to the Inspector General, investigators are examining possible links between certain fraudulent activities and international criminal networks, with concerns that illegal financial gains could be connected to other serious crimes.
The investigation has drawn significant attention in India because Indian professionals receive the largest share of H1 B visas issued by the United States. During the 2024 fiscal year, Indians accounted for nearly 71 percent of approved H One B visas, making the program a key pathway for software engineers, researchers and technology professionals seeking employment in America.
The latest developments have also raised concerns across the technology sector, as both Indian IT companies and American technology firms rely heavily on skilled foreign professionals to address talent shortages in areas such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Industry observers are closely watching the investigation for its potential impact on future hiring and visa policies.
