Mumbai Rains Alert: Mumbai Rain Fury Puts BMC on High Alert

Heavy rainfall continues to disrupt Mumbai as the BMC intensifies emergency operations, schools remain closed, flood response teams stay active, and residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel.

Mumbai Rains Alert: Authorities in Mumbai have stepped up emergency measures after relentless rainfall severely affected normal life across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has declared a high alert as continuous downpours over the past three days triggered flooding in several areas and disrupted transportation.

Disaster response teams have been deployed across vulnerable locations to monitor the situation and assist residents. High capacity pumps are being used to remove water from low lying neighbourhoods, while BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide is personally supervising relief operations from the central control room. As a precaution, both government and private educational institutions have been asked to remain closed.

According to weather officials, eastern suburbs recorded nearly 380 millimetres of rainfall during the last 48 hours. Central parts of the city received around 300 millimetres, while western suburbs witnessed nearly 345 millimetres of rain. Strong winds reaching speeds of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour have added to the challenging weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department has revised its earlier red alert to an orange alert. However, the department has cautioned that heavy to very heavy rainfall may continue in Mumbai over the coming days, urging people to stay alert and follow official advisories.

A special meeting of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has been scheduled for July 9 to review the impact of the heavy rains and assess the city’s preparedness. Officials have advised residents to avoid leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary and to stay away from trees and large billboards during strong winds. Citizens requiring emergency assistance have been requested to contact the civic helpline.
