The opening match had ended without a result due to rain, making this victory a significant step for the hosts.
Chasing a target of 191, England recovered brilliantly after an early collapse. India pacer Arshdeep Singh struck twice in the opening over, dismissing Phil Salt and Jos Buttler without allowing either batter to score. England found themselves under immediate pressure at 1 for 2.
Captain Harry Brook counterattacked with a quickfire 39 from just 15 balls, shifting the momentum back in England’s favor. After his departure, Jacob Bethell anchored the chase with remarkable composure. The young batter remained unbeaten on 76 from 46 deliveries, striking five fours and five sixes to guide England home with one over to spare. Tom Banton also played a valuable knock of 39 during an important partnership with Bethell.
Earlier, India posted a competitive total of 190 for 7 after electing to bat first. Opener Ishan Kishan narrowly missed a half century with 49 runs, while Abhishek Sharma contributed 43. Captain Shreyas Iyer added 37, and Tilak Varma provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten 24 from just 11 balls.
England all rounder Sam Curran impressed with the ball, claiming three wickets to restrict India from crossing the 200 run mark. Although Arshdeep Singh finished with three wickets, England’s middle order successfully handled the chase after the early setbacks.
With the series now finely poised, both teams will meet in the third and final T20 on July 7, where the winner will claim the series.
