From Domestic Worker to State Minister: Kalita Majhi’s Remarkable Political Rise

Once employed as a domestic worker to support her family, Kalita Majhi has now reached a significant milestone in politics by becoming a minister in West Bengal's government.

Kalita Majhi’s journey from financial hardship to a position in the state government has drawn widespread attention across West Bengal. After securing victory as a BJP legislator in the recent Assembly elections, she has now taken oath as a Minister of State in Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s cabinet.

Speaking to the media after her swearing in ceremony on Monday, Majhi expressed gratitude and disbelief at how her life had changed. She said she never imagined becoming an MLA, let alone a minister, and described the opportunity as one of the proudest moments of her life.

Her political career began at the grassroots level as a booth worker for the BJP. Despite facing setbacks, including a defeat in the 2021 Assembly elections from the Ausgram constituency, she continued working for the party. Her persistence paid off when the BJP gave her another opportunity in the 2026 elections, where she emerged victorious and later earned a place in the state cabinet.

Majhi revealed that she has been associated with the BJP since 2014. According to her, becoming an MLA initially made her focus solely on the needs of her constituency. However, her new ministerial role comes with greater responsibilities, requiring her to work for the welfare and development of the entire state.

Behind her political success lies a story of struggle and determination. Due to severe financial difficulties, Majhi had to discontinue her education. To help support her family, she worked as a domestic helper in several households and earned a modest monthly income of around Rs 2,500 during those years.

Her family continues to maintain a simple lifestyle. Her husband works as a plumber, while their son Parth is currently pursuing his schooling. Majhi’s rise from humble beginnings to a ministerial position is being viewed by many as an example of perseverance and dedication.

The appointment marks a significant chapter in her life, transforming a former domestic worker into one of the faces of West Bengal’s new administration. Her journey reflects how determination and sustained political involvement can open unexpected doors to leadership and public service.
