CSK CEO Gives Fresh Hope on MS Dhoni IPL 2027 Return
Chennai Super Kings fans received fresh optimism after CEO Kasi Viswanathan hinted that MS Dhoni could return for IPL 2027 despite missing the entire 2026 season with injury concerns.

Even after missing the entire IPL 2026 season, MS Dhoni continues to remain the biggest talking point among Chennai Super Kings fans. Speculation around his retirement grew stronger after he stayed away from every match this season, including CSK’s final game at Chepauk. However, recent comments from CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan have once again sparked hope about Dhoni returning next year.
The veteran cricketer did not play a single match during IPL 2026 due to multiple fitness and injury concerns. Reports suggested Dhoni struggled with thigh muscle issues, thumb injuries and overall fitness problems throughout the tournament. Despite regaining fitness midway through the season, he reportedly chose not to return to the playing eleven.
Fans expected Dhoni to make at least one appearance during Chennai Super Kings’ final home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk Stadium. The atmosphere at the stadium was emotional as supporters believed it could be Dhoni’s farewell appearance in IPL cricket. Although he arrived with the team, Dhoni ultimately did not feature in the match, leaving fans disappointed.
This season became the first time in IPL history that Dhoni remained part of the squad without playing a single game. With the former captain set to turn 45 in July, many believed IPL 2026 quietly marked the end of his legendary career. The uncertainty around his future created widespread discussion among cricket followers and CSK supporters.
Amid these retirement rumours, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise still expects Dhoni to return next season. He stated that there had been no official discussion with Dhoni regarding retirement or continuation but expressed confidence that the former captain would honour his promise of playing his final IPL match at Chepauk in front of Chennai fans.
Sources close to the team also indicated that Dhoni remained largely away from cricket operations this season. Earlier, he was deeply involved in team strategy, player selections and batting order decisions. However, this year those responsibilities were reportedly handled by head coach Stephen Fleming and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Even though signs suggest Dhoni may be preparing to step away from the game, CSK supporters continue to believe that the legendary captain will return one final time to receive a proper farewell at Chepauk Stadium.
