Falta Repoll Delivers Stunning BJP Surge as Political Equations Shift in Bengal

The Falta repoll in West Bengal ended with a dramatic BJP rise as leaders called the result a reflection of voter choice and a setback for pressure driven politics

West Bengal witnessed a politically significant development after the Falta Assembly repoll produced a result that few expected in such a decisive manner. The BJP secured an overwhelming mandate, creating fresh debate over the changing electoral landscape in the state.

Debangshu Panda of the BJP delivered a dominant performance at the ballot box by collecting 1,49,666 votes. His closest challenger, CPI M candidate Shambhu Nath Kurmi, received 40,645 votes, resulting in a margin exceeding one lakh votes. Congress nominee Abdur Razak Molla finished with 10,084 votes.

The outcome also turned attention toward the ruling Trinamool Congress, which faced an unexpectedly poor result in the constituency. TMC candidate Jahangir Khan received only 7,783 votes and ended in fourth position, losing his election deposit in the process.

After the announcement of results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the voters for their participation and stated that the public had delivered a clear verdict. He said the election result represented the strength of democratic values and reflected people’s confidence in the BJP.

Reacting to the outcome, Suvendu Adhikari described the development as an indication of political change in West Bengal. He stated that citizens had voted freely and added that the result may signal the beginning of a wider shift.

The repoll itself was conducted under heavy security arrangements after several complaints emerged during the earlier voting phase held on April 29. Allegations included suspected tampering concerns involving EVM machines and reports related to ink irregularities, which prompted the Election Commission to order fresh polling in all 285 booths on May 21.

In an unusual development before the voting process, the TMC candidate had announced his decision to step away from the contest. However, since the official deadline for nomination withdrawal had already passed, his name remained on the voting machines during the repoll process.
