Himanta Biswa Sharma Resigns as Assam Chief Minister After NDA Victory

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma submitted his resignation after the NDA alliance secured a massive Assembly election victory and preparations began for forming the new government.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma resigned from his post on Wednesday following the NDA alliance’s sweeping victory in the state Assembly elections. The resignation is part of the constitutional process ahead of the formation of the new government in Assam.

Sharma visited Raj Bhavan in Guwahati and personally handed over his resignation letter to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. The Governor accepted the resignation and requested him to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government officially takes charge.

The BJP led NDA alliance delivered a dominant performance in the elections by winning 102 seats in the 126 member Assam Assembly. The result left the opposition far behind and strengthened the BJP’s political hold in the northeastern region.

Political observers believe Himanta Biswa Sharma is set to return as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. He led the BJP campaign aggressively during the elections and remained the face of the alliance throughout the state.

A meeting of the BJP legislative party is expected to take place soon where Sharma will likely be formally elected as the leader. Once the party leadership gives final approval, he is expected to take oath again as Assam Chief Minister.

After the election results, Sharma credited the victory to the government’s focus on development projects and welfare schemes. He said the people of Assam once again placed their trust in the BJP alliance because of governance and progress made during the previous term.

The landslide victory is also being viewed as a major boost for the BJP’s influence across northeastern states, where the party has been steadily expanding its political presence over the past few years.
