Zhang Zhanshuo: Zhang Zhanshuo Makes Asian Games History With Seven Gold Medals

Zhang Zhanshuo: Chinese swimming sensation Zhang Zhanshuo has turned heads at the 2026 Asian Games with a stunning seven gold medal haul. The 19 year old completed his campaign on Friday by winning the men’s 400m freestyle in a Games record time of 3:41.28.

The final race gave Zhang a seventh gold medal and made him the first swimmer to win seven golds at a single edition of the Asian Games. Before him, Japan’s Rikako Ikee and China’s Zhang Yufei had won six golds each at the 2018 and 2022 Asian Games respectively.

Zhang’s gold medal collection came from both individual and team events. He won the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle events, besides helping China claim gold in three relay races.

His final victory was particularly impressive. Zhang finished the 400m freestyle in 3 minutes and 41.28 seconds, breaking the previous Asian Games record by 0.15 seconds. He finished more than four seconds ahead of Japan’s Kazushi Imafuku.

After touching the wall, Zhang sat on the lane divider and counted his seven medals on his fingers. The moment captured the scale of his achievement, although the swimmer himself remained calm after completing his remarkable week.

What makes his performance even more notable is that this was Zhang’s Asian Games debut. At 19, he has already emerged as one of the leading young swimmers in China, while his performance has also added to China’s dominant showing in the swimming competition. China finished the six day swimming programme with 30 gold medals.

Zhang, however, is already looking beyond the Asian Games. He said the continental event was not his ultimate target and that his focus remains on competing at the Olympics and closing the gap with the best swimmers in the world.

His 400m freestyle performance also brought him close to the world record. Zhang’s 3:41.28 was around 1.3 seconds slower than Germany’s Lukas Martens’ world record of 3:39.98.

The Chinese teenager now has the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in his sights. Rather than celebrating for too long, Zhang has spoken about staying focused and working on the areas where he still sees room for improvement.

His seven gold medals also put his achievement among the biggest individual medal hauls at these Asian Games. North Korean shooter So Gin Man remains the overall record holder for gold medals at a single Games edition, with seven golds and a silver in 1982, but Zhang has created a new benchmark in swimming.

For a 19 year old making his Asian Games debut, seven gold medals is an extraordinary start. Zhang Zhanshuo leaves Tokyo with a record, a collection of titles and a much bigger target waiting ahead.
