AC TV Fridge and Washing Machine Prices May Rise From October 1

AC, TV, fridge and washing machine prices may rise from October 1 as manufacturers face higher costs for copper, aluminium, steel, plastics, freight and other key materials.

Consumers preparing for the festive shopping season may have to pay more for several household appliances from October 1. Manufacturers across categories such as air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators and washing machines are considering fresh price increases as production costs continue to climb.

Industry reports indicate that air conditioner prices could rise by around 5 to 8 percent, while some manufacturers are planning increases of about 3 to 4 percent for televisions, refrigerators and washing machines. The exact increase is expected to differ between brands and product categories.

The latest price revision comes at an important time for the appliance industry. The period from Onam through Dussehra and Diwali usually accounts for a significant share of annual sales, making the coming weeks particularly important for manufacturers and retailers.

Higher input costs are among the main reasons behind the expected increase. Copper, aluminium and steel have become more expensive, while materials linked to crude oil have also added pressure to manufacturing expenses. Rising transportation and freight costs are creating another challenge for companies.

Copper has become particularly important for the air conditioner segment because a typical air conditioner uses a substantial quantity of the metal. Industry executives have pointed to the sharp increase in copper prices over the past year as one of the reasons behind repeated revisions.

Blue Star Managing Director B. Thiagarajan has said that higher raw material costs have already pushed up prices of air conditioners and deep freezers by around 5 to 8 percent. According to him, the company has implemented multiple price increases this year because of the continuing rise in input costs.

Godrej Appliances has also indicated that another round of price increases has become necessary after raw material costs rose substantially following the previous revision. The company expects increases across different categories, although the timing could vary between brands.

Some manufacturers have already started passing higher costs on to customers. Daikin Airconditioning India has reportedly raised prices by around 8 to 10 percent from September 16. The company has linked the increase to higher copper prices, stronger dollar conditions and rising commodity costs.

Haier India is also preparing to increase prices. The company has indicated that room air conditioner prices could rise by about 5 percent from October 1. Further increases could follow later if input costs continue moving higher.

Haier has also indicated that televisions, washing machines and other appliance categories could see smaller increases. The company is considering a series of revisions rather than relying on a single increase, depending on how raw material prices develop.

The sharp movement in copper prices has become a major concern for manufacturers. Industry executives have pointed out that copper prices have moved considerably higher compared with the previous year, increasing the cost of producing appliances that depend heavily on the metal.

Television manufacturers are also preparing for higher prices. Super Plastronics, which sells brands including Thomson, Kodak and Blaupunkt in India, is considering another increase in television prices after October. The company has already raised prices across some appliance categories.

The television segment could face different levels of impact depending on screen size and product type. Some industry representatives have warned that smaller televisions could see a comparatively significant increase, while larger screen models may also become more expensive.

Rising prices could create a difficult situation for consumers because the festive season is normally associated with discounts and promotional offers. Customers often wait for this period to purchase large appliances, expecting attractive deals from brands and retailers.

Manufacturers, however, are not expecting the entire impact to be felt immediately. Retailers and distributors purchased additional inventory during August and September in anticipation of the festive season. This older stock was acquired at earlier prices and could remain available for several weeks.

This existing inventory may give customers an opportunity to purchase some products without immediately facing the full impact of the latest cost increases. The duration of this benefit will depend on how quickly retailers sell their existing stock.

The situation is also being closely watched by companies that have not yet finalised their next price revision. Panasonic Life Solutions India has indicated that it is assessing market conditions and consumer demand before deciding on further changes.

The company has acknowledged that manufacturers are facing continued cost pressure while also trying to maintain a balance between pricing and demand during the important festive period.

Freight expenses and supply chain disruptions are adding another layer of uncertainty. Videotex Director Arjun Bajaj has indicated that appliance prices could establish a new benchmark after Diwali if transportation and supply related costs remain elevated.

For consumers, the timing of a purchase could therefore become important. Buyers who were already planning to replace an old air conditioner, television, refrigerator or washing machine may want to compare current offers carefully before the new prices take effect.

At the same time, customers should not assume that every product from every brand will become more expensive by the same amount. Price revisions can differ according to category, model, inventory levels, manufacturing costs and individual company decisions.

The appliance industry is now entering one of its busiest sales periods of the year. Manufacturers are trying to manage rising costs without weakening festive demand, while consumers are looking for discounts before higher prices become widespread.

If raw material and logistics costs remain elevated, further revisions after the festive season cannot be ruled out. For now, the expected October increases suggest that shoppers could face higher prices for several major household appliances during the months ahead.
