Abhay Singh: Abhay Singh Gets Rs 50 Lakh Reward After Asian Games Squash Silver
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay announced a Rs 50 lakh incentive for Abhay Singh after his silver medal in men’s singles squash at the Asian Games in Japan on Sunday.
Abhay Singh: Indian squash player Abhay Singh has been rewarded for his silver medal at the Asian Games, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announcing a cash incentive of Rs 50 lakh for the athlete. The announcement came after Singh finished second in the men’s singles event in Japan.
Singh faced Malaysia’s Ng Eain Yow in the final but could not get past the defending champion. The Malaysian won the contest in straight games, 11 9, 11 5, 11 5, leaving the Indian player with the silver medal.
Following the result, Vijay congratulated Singh and said the performance had brought recognition to both Tamil Nadu and India. The state government will provide the Rs 50 lakh incentive in recognition of his achievement.
The medal is a significant addition to Singh’s Asian Games record. He was part of India’s gold medal winning men’s squash team at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and also won a mixed doubles bronze alongside Anahat Singh at those Games.
This time, Singh made his mark in the individual competition. His run to the final also gave India another major result in men’s singles squash. He became only the second Indian man to win an individual squash medal at the Asian Games, following Saurav Ghosal’s silver at Hangzhou.
The final itself proved difficult for Singh. Eain Yow managed the opening game well after a close start and then took control of the following two games. Singh tried to fight back in the third, but the Malaysian player maintained his advantage and closed out the match.
The Asian Games also brought another silver medal for India in squash. Anahat Singh reached the women’s singles final, where she was beaten by Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam. Her run made her the first Indian woman to reach the Asian Games squash singles final.
For Abhay Singh, the silver marks another important step in his international career. The Tamil Nadu government’s reward adds official recognition to his latest Asian Games performance and is also intended to encourage young athletes in the state to pursue competitive sport.
