Nine passengers died after a Delhi to Bihar bound bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, while more than 20 others were rescued safely.
Greater Noida Bus Fire: Nine people died after a passenger bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida late Wednesday night. More than 20 passengers were rescued after the blaze broke out while the bus was on its way from Delhi.
The bus had started from Kashmere Gate in New Delhi and was travelling towards Mahoba. The fire broke out near the 33 kilometre point of the Yamuna Expressway, which comes under the Jewar police station area.
The emergency response began soon after the incident was reported. Police teams reached the spot along with a rescue tender, a fire tender from the Jewar toll plaza and four other fire tenders. The flames were eventually brought under control.
According to Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar, rescuers found nine people inside the bus after entering through the smoke. They had already died, with burns and suffocation suspected as the cause of death.
Most of the other passengers were able to escape from the vehicle. More than 20 people were rescued during the operation as fire personnel worked to clear the bus and search for anyone still trapped inside.
Officials are looking into what triggered the fire. The initial assessment points to a possible problem with the bus’s air conditioning system. A spark or blast may have caused the engine lubricant oil to catch fire, after which the flames spread through the vehicle.
Police have not yet identified all nine victims. Details of the passengers are being checked as part of the process to establish their identities and inform their families.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident, and the driver and conductor have been taken into custody. Investigators are also examining the bus to understand exactly how the fire started and whether any other factor played a role.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the incident and announced Rs 2 lakh financial assistance for the family of each person who died. He also directed officials to make sure injured passengers receive proper treatment and that the affected families get necessary help.
The investigation is now underway as authorities examine the vehicle and the circumstances surrounding the fire.
