Rythu Bima Extension: Telangana Government Considers Continuing Rythu Bima Until Indiramma Insurance Begins

Rythu Bima Extension: The Telangana agriculture department has asked the state government to consider extending the Rythu Bima scheme until the proposed Indiramma family insurance programme is brought into operation.

The proposal was sent to the Chief Ministers Office and the Finance Department following discussions led by Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao. The move comes after several farmer families approached public representatives seeking financial support following the suspension of the existing insurance cover.

Rythu Bima has been providing Rs 5 lakh to the families of farmers aged between 18 and 59 who die for any reason. The scheme has been in place for more than a decade and was designed to provide immediate financial support to families after the loss of a farmer.

The scheme, however, stopped after the government did not pay the premium for the 2026 to 27 financial year. The coverage ended on August 13, leaving families of farmers who died after that date without the Rs 5 lakh benefit under Rythu Bima.

The agriculture department also stopped the Rythu Bima website around the same time. This has added to uncertainty among families who were expecting assistance under the scheme.

Several affected families have since submitted representations, asking authorities to address the gap until the new insurance system becomes operational. They have pointed out that the transition could leave families without support if the new scheme takes additional time to launch.

Minister Thummala recently held a meeting with senior agriculture officials to discuss the issue. He asked officials to examine whether Rythu Bima could be continued during the interim period so that eligible families would not be left without financial assistance.

Based on the ministers directions, the department prepared its proposal and forwarded it to the Chief Ministers Office and the Finance Department. The next step will depend on the governments decision and the availability of funds for extending the coverage.

If the proposal receives approval, the agriculture department could issue orders allowing Rythu Bima benefits to continue for the required interim period. Such a move could provide relief to families affected by the gap in insurance coverage.

The government has already decided to replace Rythu Bima with the broader Indiramma family insurance scheme. However, details about its implementation date, eligibility rules and the protection available to families covered under the earlier arrangement are yet to be fully clarified.

For now, farmer families are waiting for a decision on the agriculture departments proposal. A favourable decision could offer temporary financial protection until the new insurance scheme is formally introduced.
