Modi Putin Meeting: PM Modi and Putin to Meet Ahead of BRICS Summit

Modi Putin Meeting: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet in New Delhi on September 11, just a day before the BRICS summit begins in the Indian capital.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the two leaders would hold bilateral discussions ahead of the 18th BRICS summit. The meeting is expected to cover areas that remain important to the relationship between the two countries, including trade and economic ties.

India and Russia have continued to strengthen their partnership across several sectors. Peskov described India as a strategic partner and pointed to cooperation in defence, energy, space, transport, science and technology.

The talks are also likely to touch on major international developments. The Russia Ukraine conflict and tensions in the Gulf could figure in the discussions, along with their possible impact on the global economy.

Moscow has also indicated that it is open to India playing a role in efforts to resolve the Russia Ukraine crisis. Peskov said Russia supports India’s involvement in finding a way forward. He also referred to US President Donald Trump’s efforts to bring the conflict towards an end and said Washington was working to restart talks with Ukraine.

The BRICS summit will add another important dimension to the visit. The 18th meeting of the grouping is scheduled to take place in Delhi on September 12 and 13 under India’s presidency.

Peskov described BRICS as more than a regular international organisation, calling it a major global grouping. Russia, he said, supports further expansion of the bloc and is open to more countries taking part in its activities.

Nuclear energy is another area expected to remain high on the India Russia agenda. Peskov said cooperation in the nuclear sector has become an important part of the bilateral relationship.

He pointed to the Kudankulam nuclear power project, where work is progressing, and said discussions were also underway regarding another nuclear plant to be built in India. Moscow sees nuclear energy as one of the areas where long term cooperation between the two countries can grow further.

The Modi Putin meeting is therefore expected to cover both bilateral priorities and wider global issues, with the BRICS summit providing the broader diplomatic setting for discussions among major emerging economies.
