Chenab River Incident: Young Woman Jumps Into Chenab River After Call With Father

Chenab River Incident: A young woman allegedly jumped into the Chenab River from a bridge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Sunday while her father was still speaking to her over the phone.

The woman, identified by police as Payal Devi from Prem Nagar, had gone to a local fair earlier in the afternoon. After some time, she called her father and told him that she was feeling unwell and wanted to see a doctor.

She reportedly went to a hospital but could not find the doctor there. She then began returning home on a motorcycle with another person.

At around 2 pm, when they reached the bridge over the Chenab River, Payal asked the rider to stop. She got off the motorcycle and moved towards the bridge railing.

The rider tried to stop her after she crossed the railing. She reportedly warned him not to come closer, saying she would jump into the river. The man then called her father and handed the phone to Payal.

Her father tried to persuade her to step back. During the conversation, she reportedly told him that she wanted to leave and that it was her own decision. Moments later, she gave him a flying kiss and said goodbye before jumping into the river.

Police and rescue teams were alerted soon after the incident. Search operations were launched in the Chenab River to locate Payal.

Authorities have registered a case and started an investigation. Police are also trying to determine what led to the incident and whether any circumstances surrounding her visit to the fair or her health played a role.

The search operation was continuing as rescue personnel worked in the river and surrounding areas.
