Raina on Impact Rule: The debate over the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League continues, and former India batter Suresh Raina has now made his position clear. He believes the rule is taking away opportunities for players who can contribute in more than one department.

Raina said he is not in favour of continuing the rule in the IPL. According to him, some physically fit players are being used mainly for their batting and then left out of the rest of the game. He questioned how such players can develop their overall skills if they are not required to contribute throughout the match.

One of his biggest concerns is the effect on bowlers. Raina feels the additional batting option has made it easier for teams to play aggressively, leaving bowlers with fewer ways to contain the opposition.

The former cricketer also pointed to the changing nature of IPL scores. He recalled a time when a total around 170 runs was considered a strong score. Now, even totals of 250 are being chased, while teams are increasingly looking capable of crossing the 300 run mark. In his view, this has turned the rule into a difficult challenge for bowlers.

Raina also compared the IPL with international cricket. He noted that the Impact Player system is not used in the World Cup and questioned why the IPL should depend so heavily on it. He acknowledged that the rule may have been introduced to make matches more entertaining, but said the impact on the bowling side cannot be ignored.

The Impact Player rule was introduced in the IPL in 2023. It allows teams to bring in a substitute during a match, giving them greater flexibility while building their playing combination. The rule remains part of the IPL for now, although the BCCI has recently sought feedback from all 10 franchises as it reviews the system ahead of future seasons.

Raina also shared his thoughts on Indian players taking part in overseas franchise leagues. He said Indian cricketers do not necessarily need to play in competitions such as the Big Bash League or The Hundred.

He explained that the IPL has grown into the biggest franchise cricket league, while overseas players now actively seek opportunities to play in India. Given that situation, Raina feels there is little reason for Indian players to look outside the country for similar exposure.

The former IPL star’s comments come at a time when the Impact Player rule is again under serious discussion. Several players and captains have raised concerns about its influence on team balance and the development of all rounders. The BCCI’s latest consultation with franchises could eventually determine whether the rule continues in its present form.
