The accident took place in the Kaipamangalam area while the students were travelling from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur. The car reportedly hit the truck from behind on the highway, leaving the vehicle badly damaged.
Police and emergency personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information about the crash. Getting the occupants out of the wrecked car was difficult because of the impact.
Seven students died at the scene, while another was taken to hospital in critical condition. The eighth student later died while undergoing treatment, according to the police.
The victims were identified as students of an engineering college in the Dindigul region of Tamil Nadu. Police said the identities and other details of the deceased were yet to be officially released.
Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Excessive speed is suspected to have played a role, although the exact cause has not yet been established.
Police also said road repair work was underway on the national highway when the accident occurred. The condition of the road, visibility and other factors are being examined as part of the investigation.
The incident has left the families of the students in shock, while authorities continue efforts to establish the full sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.
