Gmail Gets Gemini Voice Features To Find Emails And Create Documents

Google is making its Workspace apps more convenient with a new set of Gemini voice features that allow users to complete certain tasks by simply speaking to the AI assistant. The new tools are being introduced across Gmail, Google Docs and Google Keep.

The update is built around three features called Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live. Although each one is designed for a different Workspace application, the basic idea remains the same. Users can describe what they need in natural language, and Gemini can help complete the task.

Gmail Live is likely to be the most useful addition for people who frequently spend time searching through their inbox. Instead of opening individual messages or scrolling through lengthy email conversations, users can ask Gemini for specific information contained in their emails.

For example, someone could ask about travel details mentioned in an email or look for information related to an upcoming school activity. Gemini can search the available inbox information and present the relevant details, reducing the need to manually check multiple messages.

The second feature, Docs Live, is aimed at people who have an idea but do not want to start a document from scratch. Google describes it as a hands free thought partner that can help users turn spoken ideas into a more organized document.

Users can explain their thoughts aloud, and Gemini can help structure those ideas into a document. With the required permission, Docs Live can also use information from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web to provide additional context.

This could be particularly useful during brainstorming sessions, when preparing an outline or when working on an initial draft. The voice based approach allows users to focus on explaining their ideas instead of worrying about the structure of the document immediately.

Google Keep is also getting its own voice focused feature. Keep Live is designed for quickly capturing thoughts, lists and tasks. Users can speak their ideas instead of manually typing them, while Gemini can organize the information into notes and actionable items.

The feature could be useful when users have several thoughts to record at once. Rather than creating separate notes and lists manually, they can explain what they want to remember and allow Gemini to organize the information.

Google announced the new features through a company blog post. Google CEO Sundar Pichai also highlighted the update, explaining that the new Gemini voice tools are designed to let people interact with Gmail, Keep and Docs through conversation.

The rollout is being targeted at Google AI subscribers. Gmail Live and Keep Live are being made available to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Docs Live is available to Pro and Ultra subscribers.

The company has also indicated that the features will eventually reach Google Workspace business customers. Availability may depend on the account type and rollout schedule, so users may not see the new tools immediately.

The arrival of these features reflects Google’s broader push to make Gemini a more active part of Workspace rather than keeping it limited to conventional question and answer interactions. Voice commands could make some everyday tasks quicker, particularly when typing is inconvenient.

However, the new tools are not designed to replace every existing Workspace function. Their usefulness will depend on the type of information available to Gemini, account permissions and the specific task being requested.
