Lava Feature Phones Under Rs 2000 Get PhonePe UPI Payments Without Internet

Lava has brought PhonePe UPI payments to select feature phones, allowing users to send money, check balances, link bank accounts, and make payments without mobile internet access.

Digital payments have become a regular part of everyday life in India, but internet access can still be a barrier for people using basic mobile phones. Lava is now addressing that gap by bringing PhonePe UPI payments to selected feature phones priced below Rs 2000.

The Indian handset maker has announced support for PhonePe digital payments on its feature phone portfolio. The service is built around NPCI’s UPI 123PAY technology, which is designed to let users access UPI services without relying on an active mobile data connection.

The first Lava phones to receive the facility are the Lava A7 Torch 2026 and Lava A2 Smart. Both models sit in the entry level feature phone category and are priced below Rs 2000. Lava also plans to extend the payment facility to additional feature phone models in its lineup.

For users who do not own a smartphone, the move could make digital payments considerably more accessible. It could also be useful in places where mobile internet connectivity is inconsistent. Instead of depending on an internet connection for every transaction, users can access supported UPI services through the telecom network.

How UPI Payments Work Without Internet

The key technology behind the service is UPI 123PAY, developed by NPCI for feature phone users and situations where internet connectivity is unavailable. The system allows UPI related services to work without requiring conventional mobile data.

PhonePe’s integration with the supported Lava feature phones is therefore different from the usual smartphone based UPI experience. Users do not need an internet enabled smartphone simply to access basic digital payment services.

The service is designed to make everyday banking and payments possible through a feature phone. This could be particularly useful for customers who continue to prefer simple handsets because of their affordability, battery life and straightforward operation.

More Than Just Sending Money

The new facility is not limited to transferring money. Supported users can link their bank account and set up a UPI PIN as part of the payment process. They can also access services such as checking their account balance and making payments to merchants.

This gives feature phone users access to several functions that have traditionally been associated with smartphone based UPI applications. For someone who uses a basic handset as their primary phone, the ability to make a digital payment without switching to a smartphone can be a practical change.

Merchant payments are another important part of the service. As UPI continues to become a common payment method at shops and businesses across the country, extending access to feature phone users could help bring more customers into the digital payment system.

The development is also significant because feature phones remain relevant in the Indian market. While smartphones dominate the mobile industry, many consumers still choose affordable basic handsets for communication and essential services.

Lava’s decision to introduce the PhonePe facility on models below Rs 2000 places digital payment capabilities within reach of users who may not want to spend more on a smartphone. The company’s plan to bring the feature to additional models could further expand its availability.

The integration also highlights how UPI is evolving beyond smartphone applications. Technologies such as UPI 123PAY are intended to reduce the dependence on mobile internet and make digital payments accessible across different types of devices.

For Lava customers using the A7 Torch 2026 and A2 Smart, the addition of PhonePe UPI support could make the basic feature phone more useful for everyday transactions. Instead of being limited mainly to calls and messages, compatible devices can now provide access to essential digital payment services as well.

The feature is particularly relevant for people who face connectivity limitations or prefer not to use smartphones. With bank linking, UPI PIN setup, balance checks and merchant payments included, the service gives feature phone users a broader way to participate in India’s growing digital payment ecosystem.
