The incident occurred on Monday in Muscatine, where police received reports of gunfire at a residence on Park Avenue shortly after noon. Officers rushed to the scene and discovered four people suffering from gunshot wounds. All four victims were pronounced dead at the location.
Investigators later identified the suspected gunman as 52 year old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine. After allegedly carrying out the attack, he left the scene, prompting an extensive search operation by law enforcement agencies.
While continuing their investigation, officers uncovered two additional victims at separate locations. One body was found at a residence on Mill Street, while another was discovered inside a business establishment on Grandview Avenue. Both victims had suffered fatal gunshot injuries.
Police eventually tracked McFarland to a riverfront trail near the Mississippi River. Authorities attempted to engage with him, but before he could be taken into custody, he reportedly used a firearm to take his own life. Emergency responders tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary findings indicate that all six victims were related to the suspect. Investigators believe family conflicts played a major role in the tragedy, though the exact circumstances leading to the shootings remain under investigation.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies described the incident as a horrific and deeply disturbing act. He said the tragedy has devastated the local community, which is home to around 24,000 residents and is generally known for its peaceful environment.
Officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses as part of the investigation. The names of the victims are expected to be released after all family members have been notified.
