A recent incident at Chandigarh Airport has once again highlighted the hidden risks of carrying everyday electronic gadgets on flights. On a Tuesday, a passenger on an IndiGo flight arriving from Hyderabad experienced a sudden fire in their power bank. Within minutes, smoke spread through the cabin, creating panic among passengers and forcing an emergency evacuation using slides. Several passengers also sustained minor injuries during the evacuation process. The event has once again drawn attention to the safety of lithium battery powered devices onboard aircraft.

In recent months, similar incidents have been reported more frequently, raising concern among aviation authorities. Just weeks before this event, another IndiGo flight faced a comparable situation involving a power bank. With repeated cases coming to light, discussions have begun on tightening regulations around carrying and using power banks during air travel. While a final decision has not yet been announced, security agencies are closely reviewing the risks and possible restrictions.

Experts explain that the core issue lies in the lithium ion batteries used in power banks. These batteries are designed to store a large amount of energy in a compact space, which makes them efficient but also sensitive under certain conditions. When something goes wrong inside the battery, such as a manufacturing defect, physical damage, overcharging or internal short circuit, it can trigger a dangerous chemical reaction known as thermal runaway. In this state, the battery starts heating rapidly and cannot cool down on its own, eventually leading to fire or even explosion.

Air travel conditions can further increase this risk. Changes in cabin pressure, continuous vibration during flight and limited airflow in confined spaces can contribute to heat buildup inside electronic devices. If a power bank is already damaged or poorly manufactured, these conditions can make it even more unstable.

This is why aviation safety experts strongly advise passengers to be cautious while carrying such devices. Using certified products that meet safety standards, avoiding contact with metal objects in bags and ensuring devices are not overcharged are some of the basic precautions that can significantly reduce risk. Authorities also stress that even small gadgets should never be underestimated when it comes to onboard safety.

As investigations continue into recent incidents, the aviation industry is now being pushed to reconsider how portable charging devices are regulated during flights. What once seemed like a harmless travel accessory is now under serious scrutiny for its potential to turn into a mid air hazard.
