AI Glasses by AIIMS Open New World for Visually Impaired Children

Artificial intelligence is now becoming a real support system for visually impaired children in India. In a major step toward inclusive healthcare, AIIMS New Delhi has introduced AI powered smart vision glasses that aim to transform how blind and visually impaired children interact with the world around them. The initiative has been taken by the Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, focusing on making daily life easier and more independent for those who struggle with vision loss.

The smart vision glasses are built using advanced artificial intelligence and computer vision technology. These glasses do more than just assist vision, they convert visual surroundings into real time audio instructions. This means that a child wearing them can understand what is happening around simply through sound feedback. Features like object detection, face recognition, text reading aloud, obstacle alerts and navigation guidance are all integrated into the device, making it a practical tool for everyday movement and learning.

According to experts at AIIMS, this technology has the potential to reduce dependency on caregivers and help users build confidence in their routine lives. Dr. Radhika Tandon, a senior ophthalmology expert, has highlighted that AI based assistive tools like these can open new opportunities in education, employment and social interaction for visually impaired individuals. The goal is not just assistance, but empowerment.

The impact of this initiative is already visible among children. In the first phase conducted in January 2026, around 53 children received these smart glasses. In the second phase held in May, another 40 children were added to the program. Reports suggest that nearly 1500 children from various blind schools across the Delhi NCR region have registered to benefit from this initiative, showing the growing demand and hope around this technology.

Experts believe that such innovations can significantly improve quality of life by helping visually impaired individuals perform daily tasks with greater ease. From reading signs to moving through crowded places, the glasses act as a digital companion that guides them step by step. While the technology is still expanding, its early results indicate a strong shift toward more independent living for children who previously relied heavily on others.

AIIMS believes this is just the beginning of a larger transformation in assistive healthcare. With continued development, AI powered vision support tools could become an essential part of inclusive education and accessibility in India.
