India Steps Up 2036 Olympic Bid With High Level

Following the meeting, Amit Shah said on X that the Narendra Modi government remains committed to making India a global sporting destination through the organisation of international sporting events.

Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, senior officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and representatives of the Gujarat government attended the discussion. The officials briefed Shah on the preparations and infrastructure plans being considered for Ahmedabad.

The proposed Olympic plan comes as India seeks to expand its presence on the international sporting stage. Hosting the Olympics would require extensive facilities, transport networks, accommodation, security arrangements and other supporting infrastructure. The government is therefore examining different aspects of the proposal well ahead of the bidding process.

Ahmedabad has emerged as a key part of this wider strategy. The city has already hosted several major sporting events and has been developing facilities capable of accommodating large competitions. Its selection as the potential Olympic host city is also linked to Gujarat’s broader plans to strengthen its position in international sports.

The government is not limiting its ambitions to the Olympics. Plans to seek the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2029 Police and Fire Games for Ahmedabad indicate an effort to create a long term calendar of international competitions. Such events could provide athletes with greater exposure while also encouraging further investment in sporting infrastructure.

A recent development at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow also added momentum to Ahmedabad’s campaign. After the Games concluded, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi received the Commonwealth Games flag on behalf of Ahmedabad as the city seeks to become the next host.

The 2036 Olympics remain a major national ambition, but the process involves several stages before a final host is selected. India’s preparations are therefore expected to continue with infrastructure planning, international engagement and coordination between the central and state governments.

For Indian sport, a successful Olympic bid could represent a significant opportunity beyond simply hosting the event. A large scale international competition could accelerate the creation of training centres, improve facilities for athletes and encourage young talent to take up competitive sport.

The focus on Ahmedabad also reflects the government’s intention to build an ecosystem rather than prepare only for a single tournament. If the city secures more international events in the coming years, the experience gained from organising them could contribute to India’s larger Olympic ambitions.

With the government now closely reviewing the bid and associated preparations, Ahmedabad is set to remain at the centre of India’s plans for major global sporting events. The coming years will determine how effectively the proposed infrastructure, sporting facilities and organisational framework can be developed to support the country’s 2036 Olympic goal.
