Overripe Bananas? Try These Easy and Tasty Ways to Reuse Them
Dark spots do not always mean bananas have gone bad, and ripe bananas can add natural sweetness, moisture and flavour to several everyday recipes.

Bananas often sit in the fruit basket for a few extra days and suddenly develop dark spots on the peel. That is usually when many people decide they are no longer worth eating. In reality, a ripe banana can be especially useful in the kitchen, provided it has no signs of spoilage.
The softer texture and stronger sweetness make overripe bananas a convenient ingredient for everything from breakfast dishes to desserts. Instead of throwing them away, a few simple ideas can turn them into something everyone at home can enjoy.
Make soft banana bread and cakes
Overripe bananas are particularly useful for baking. Mash the fruit thoroughly and add it to cake or banana bread batter. The banana adds moisture and natural sweetness, helping the finished bake stay soft.
This is also a handy way to use several bananas at once when they are becoming too ripe to eat on their own.
Blend a quick smoothie
The natural sweetness of a ripe banana can make smoothies taste richer without requiring much added sugar. Blend one banana with milk or yogurt, along with almonds and a small amount of cinnamon for a simple breakfast drink.
Bananas can also add thickness to smoothies, giving them a creamy texture.
Try banana pancakes
A ripe banana can easily become part of a quick breakfast. Mash it and combine it with oats, egg and a small amount of baking soda before cooking small pancakes on a pan.
The naturally sweet flavour makes these pancakes particularly appealing to children, while the recipe can be adjusted with nuts, fruit or cinnamon according to taste.
Make banana ice cream at home
For a simple frozen dessert, cut ripe bananas into pieces and freeze them for several hours. Once completely frozen, blend the pieces until they become smooth and creamy.
The result is a banana based frozen treat with a naturally sweet flavour. Other ingredients such as cocoa, nuts or cinnamon can be added if desired.
Use banana as a natural sweetener
Mashed ripe banana can also replace some of the sugar used in foods such as oatmeal, porridge, halwa and baked dishes. Since the fruit is already sweet, it can reduce the need for additional sugar while adding its own flavour and moisture.
However, bananas with mould, an unusual smell or signs of fermentation should not be used. Dark spots alone are not necessarily a sign that the fruit has spoiled.
So, the next time a few bananas become too soft, there is no need to send them straight to the bin. A little preparation can turn them into breakfast, dessert or a useful ingredient for the next recipe.
