How to Grow Green Chillies at Home
Fresh green chillies are a regular part of Indian cooking, but buying them repeatedly from the market is not the only option. If you have a sunny balcony, terrace or suitable spot near a window, you can grow chilli plants in containers at home.

The process does not require a large garden or expensive gardening equipment. Even the seeds from fully mature red chillies used in the kitchen can be used to start new plants.

Take seeds from ripe or dried red chillies and spread them out to dry for about a day. Before planting, soaking the seeds in water for roughly two days can help prepare them for germination. This makes the method fairly approachable even for someone trying container gardening for the first time.

Choose the Right Pot and Soil
A medium sized pot or grow bag is enough to begin with, provided it has proper drainage holes at the bottom. Good drainage is important because excess water around the roots can damage the plant.

For the growing mix, ordinary garden soil can be combined with well decomposed manure or vermicompost. The aim is to create soil that is loose enough for roots to grow while providing adequate nutrients.

Planting the Seeds
Once the pot is ready, place the prepared seeds in the soil and cover them lightly. The seeds should not be buried too deeply because this can make germination difficult.

After planting, gently sprinkle water over the soil and keep it slightly moist. Avoid flooding the pot. Too much standing water can cause the seeds to rot before they get a chance to grow.

It is also better not to overcrowd the container. Depending on the size of the pot, keeping one or two healthy plants allows them to receive enough nutrients, air and growing space.

Sunlight and Regular Care
Chilli plants need plenty of sunlight to grow well. Around five to six hours of direct sunlight each day can support healthy growth, so a sunny balcony, terrace or bright outdoor area is ideal.

Watering should be based on the moisture in the soil rather than following a fixed schedule. If the surface is still damp, there is usually no need to add more water. Regular but moderate watering is preferable to keeping the soil constantly soaked.

As the plant grows, providing suitable nutrition can also support flowering and fruit development. Basic care and enough sunlight can make a noticeable difference to the final harvest.

When Can You Harvest
With suitable sunlight, moisture and nutrition, chilli plants can begin producing small white flowers roughly 30 to 40 days after planting. Fruits generally develop after flowering, and the first green chillies may become ready for harvesting at around two months.

The timing can vary depending on the variety, weather, soil and growing conditions. Once the chillies reach a suitable size, they can be picked as needed and the plant can continue producing more fruit.

For households that regularly use green chillies, growing a few plants in pots can be a simple way to maintain a small supply at home. It also turns leftover kitchen seeds into something useful instead of throwing them away.
