Fish Bone Stuck In Your Throat? Here Is What You Should Do Safely

A fish bone stuck in the throat can be uncomfortable, but forcing food or drinks down may make the injury worse and should be avoided.

Eating fish can sometimes lead to a small bone becoming lodged in the throat. The first reaction is often to panic or try swallowing something quickly to push it down. However, that approach is not always safe.

The safest first step is to stop eating and drinking for the moment. Do not try to force the bone down with large pieces of rice, bread, banana, peanuts or other solid foods. Such methods can push the bone deeper or cause additional irritation.

It is also better not to put fingers or sharp objects into the throat in an attempt to remove the bone. This can cause an injury and make the situation more difficult.

Avoid common home remedies
Several traditional suggestions claim that swallowing a sticky or bulky food can carry a fish bone into the stomach. These include rice balls, bread with peanut butter, bananas and other foods. There is no guarantee that these methods will safely remove a lodged bone, and forcing food down may increase discomfort or injury.

Drinking vinegar or carbonated beverages should also not be treated as a reliable solution. A fish bone can be sharp, and trying to dissolve or dislodge it with acidic drinks is not a safe substitute for medical evaluation.

Similarly, pressing the abdomen or repeatedly hitting the back is not an appropriate way to deal with an isolated fish bone stuck in the throat. These actions could cause unnecessary injury.

When medical attention is important
If the bone does not come out on its own, or the person continues to feel that something is stuck, medical attention is the safest option. A doctor can examine the throat and determine whether the bone needs to be removed.

Immediate medical help is especially important if there is difficulty breathing, severe pain, significant bleeding, inability to swallow, drooling, chest pain or worsening symptoms.

A bone that has travelled beyond the throat can occasionally cause complications, so persistent symptoms should not be ignored simply because the discomfort seems manageable.

Be careful while eating fish
Prevention is easier than dealing with a stuck bone. Fish should be eaten slowly, with attention given to small bones before taking a bite. Children need particular care, and adults should remove bones thoroughly before serving fish to them.

It is also a good idea to avoid eating fish hurriedly while talking or doing other activities. Taking a little extra time to check the food can reduce the chance of swallowing a bone accidentally.

The popular idea that a fish bone can always be pushed down with rice, bread or fruit should therefore be treated cautiously. If the sensation remains after eating fish, getting proper medical advice is a much safer choice than repeatedly trying home remedies.
