Mark Zuckerberg Apologises as Meta Faces Scrutiny Over Platform Safety
Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged shortcomings in platform moderation following discussions with Indian authorities over harmful content content policies and recent moderation related concerns.

Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has issued an apology after the company came under renewed scrutiny over its handling of harmful content and platform moderation. The statement followed discussions with Indian government officials regarding content management practices and concerns surrounding user safety.
According to sources familiar with the developments, Zuckerberg acknowledged shortcomings related to the spread of deepfake content, Child Sexual Abuse Material and certain failures in platform oversight. The apology reportedly reflected Meta’s commitment to strengthening its safety measures and improving content moderation systems.
Earlier in the day, senior Meta executives met officials from India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology during a high level meeting led by IT Secretary S Krishnan. The company’s Global Affairs leadership and other representatives participated in the discussions, which lasted for around forty five minutes.

Officials are understood to have sought an explanation regarding the removal of a video linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Gen Z outreach campaign. The meeting also focused on Meta’s approach to identifying and removing objectionable content, as well as the effectiveness of its existing moderation mechanisms.
Shortly after the meeting concluded, reports emerged that Zuckerberg had conveyed an apology while recognizing the need for stronger safeguards on the platform. The development is being viewed as part of Meta’s broader effort to address regulatory concerns and reinforce confidence in its content governance policies.
The discussions underline the increasing global focus on digital platform accountability, with governments seeking greater transparency from technology companies on issues involving harmful content, online safety and responsible moderation.
