Legendary Playback Singer Suman Kalyanpur Passes Away at 89

Celebrated singer Suman Kalyanpur, known for her timeless melodies and remarkable contribution to Indian cinema music, passed away in Mumbai, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.

Indian cinema has lost one of its most cherished voices with the passing of veteran playback singer Suman Kalyanpur. The acclaimed singer, whose melodious songs captivated generations of listeners, died at her Mumbai residence at the age of 89 after battling age related health issues.

Her death has triggered an outpouring of grief from the music fraternity, political leaders, and admirers across the country. Tributes poured in as many remembered her remarkable contribution to Indian film music and the unforgettable songs that became part of the nation’s cultural memory.

Suman Kalyanpur, born as Suman Hemmadi on January 28, 1937, in Dhaka, then part of undivided India, began her musical journey in the early 1950s. She made her debut as a playback singer with films released in 1954 and steadily built a distinguished career spanning several decades.

Over the years, she recorded between 700 and 850 songs in multiple languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and Gujarati. Her soft and expressive voice earned widespread admiration, and many listeners often compared her singing style to that of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, leading to her affectionate reputation as another iconic voice of Indian music.

Several of her songs remain evergreen favorites among music lovers. She also shared a memorable musical partnership with Mohammed Rafi, recording nearly 140 duet songs that continue to be celebrated by fans of classic Indian cinema music.

In recognition of her immense contribution to the arts, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Bhushan in 2023. The prestigious award acknowledged her decades of dedication and excellence in the field of music.

According to family members, Suman Kalyanpur had been unwell for the past month and breathed her last on Sunday evening at her residence in Mumbai’s Lokhandwala area. Her final rites are scheduled to take place in Santacruz, Mumbai.

Condolences have been expressed by several prominent personalities. Political leaders and cultural figures described her passing as a great loss to the nation. Many noted that her songs will continue to inspire generations and keep her memory alive long after her departure.
