A bridge slab under construction over the Betwa River collapsed during strong winds in Hamirpur district, killing six workers, while rescue teams continue searching for others feared trapped.

A tragic accident claimed the lives of six workers after a bridge under construction collapsed in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district during the early hours of Thursday. The incident occurred on a bridge being built across the Betwa River, connecting Morakandar Parsani and Naiti villages in the Kurara area.
According to preliminary reports, strong winds and severe weather conditions are believed to have triggered the collapse of a section of the bridge. Workers were present at the construction site when the slab suddenly gave way, leaving several people trapped beneath the debris.
Emergency teams, including local police and State Disaster Response Force personnel, rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the accident. Rescue operations were launched immediately to clear the rubble and search for survivors.
Officials confirmed that six workers lost their lives in the collapse. Several bodies have already been recovered from the wreckage, while authorities suspect that a few more workers may still be trapped under the debris.
The accident reportedly took place around 2 am, prompting an overnight rescue effort. Teams continue to work at the site as authorities assess the extent of the damage and investigate the circumstances that led to the bridge collapse.
The incident has raised concerns about construction safety and weather related risks at infrastructure project sites, as rescue personnel remain focused on locating anyone still missing beneath the rubble.
