BBC Team Meets AP Minister Nara Lokesh to Share Women Sports Survey Findings
BBC representatives presented a survey to AP Minister Nara Lokesh highlighting the rapid rise in women playing badminton across the Telugu states and discussing stronger support for future sports development.
A delegation from BBC News Telugu recently met Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh and shared the findings of a survey focused on women’s participation in sports across India. The team included BBC News Telugu Assistant Editor Anil Kumar and members of the Collective Newsroom.
One of the key highlights of the survey was the remarkable growth in the number of women playing badminton in the Telugu states. According to the findings, participation has increased threefold since 2020. The percentage of women taking up the sport rose from 3 percent in 2020 to 9 percent in recent years, reflecting growing interest and involvement.
After reviewing the survey, Nara Lokesh welcomed the positive trend and appreciated the encouraging progress in women’s sports. He said the Andhra Pradesh government is committed to creating better opportunities for athletes, especially young women, by strengthening sports infrastructure and expanding support systems.
The minister also stated that every girl with the ambition to succeed in sports should receive the encouragement and resources needed to pursue her dreams. He reaffirmed the government’s focus on building an environment where young talent can grow and achieve success in competitive sports.
