Udhayanidhi Stalin Released After High Court Relief in Trisha Remarks Case
The Madras High Court granted relief to Udhayanidhi Stalin directing his release after police questioning in the case linked to controversial remarks that sparked political and public debate.
DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was released on Tuesday after the Madras High Court directed police to free him immediately after completing their questioning in the case related to his controversial remarks that allegedly referred to actor Trisha. The court’s intervention brought a swift end to his detention on the same day.
Earlier in the day, police had taken Udhayanidhi into custody from his Chennai residence following the registration of a case over statements made during a recent public meeting. Authorities questioned him as part of the investigation before complying with the High Court’s directions.
During the court proceedings, the Tamil Nadu Advocate General informed the bench that investigators had no intention of seeking judicial custody for the DMK leader. The prosecution clarified that the purpose of the detention was limited to questioning and that he would be released after the inquiry. Accepting this submission, the court instructed police to release him once the investigation for the day was completed.
The controversy began after Udhayanidhi addressed a gathering on the Cauvery water issue, where comments made during his speech were widely interpreted as being directed at actor Trisha. The remarks triggered strong reactions from opposition parties and several public figures, who accused him of making inappropriate statements and demanded an unconditional apology.

The issue soon escalated into a legal dispute after a complaint was lodged against him, leading to the registration of a police case. Anticipating further legal action, Udhayanidhi approached the Madras High Court seeking relief, prompting the court to hear the matter on an urgent basis.
