FASTag Challans: Hyderabad Police Consider FASTag Deductions for Pending Traffic Challans

FASTag Challans: Hyderabad traffic police are considering a technology based approach to recover long pending traffic challans from vehicle owners. Under the proposal being discussed, unpaid fines could potentially be deducted automatically from a vehicle’s FASTag account.

The idea is aimed at improving e challan recovery while also encouraging motorists to take traffic violations more seriously. Officials believe linking the two systems could reduce the growing backlog of unpaid penalties.

The proposal was discussed by Cyberabad Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police Sunpreet Singh during an annual event organised by the Society for Cyberabad Security Council. Authorities are also examining the practical aspects of implementing such a system.

However, several questions still need to be addressed before the proposal can become operational. FASTag is mainly used by cars and larger vehicles, while two wheelers and many autorickshaws do not have FASTag accounts. Officials would therefore need to determine how the system could cover those vehicles.

There are also questions over whether vehicle owners would receive advance notice before any deduction, how incorrectly issued challans could be challenged and when an outstanding amount could be recovered. Clear guidelines would be required before any automatic deduction mechanism is introduced.

Hyderabad continues to face challenges from increasing vehicle numbers, congestion, illegal parking and road accidents. Along with digital enforcement, officials have highlighted the need for better public transport, improved last mile connectivity and more multilevel parking facilities in busy areas.

For now, the FASTag based challan recovery system remains a proposal under consideration, and an official decision on its implementation is awaited.
