Hyderabad residents will soon have access to specialist medical services closer to their homes, with new polyclinics focusing on early screening, referrals and reducing pressure on major hospitals.
Hyderabad Gets 145 Polyclinics: Hyderabad is set to expand neighbourhood healthcare with 145 new Aarogya Deepika polyclinics across the Core Urban Region. The centres are being planned to bring specialist consultations closer to residents, particularly those who depend on government hospitals.
Work has already been completed at 40 locations, while preparations are continuing at the remaining centres. The facilities are expected to open in phases after the required infrastructure and arrangements are completed.
At present, many people in Hyderabad rely on Basti Dawakhanas, urban health centres and primary health facilities for common health problems such as fever, cough, diabetes and high blood pressure. These centres also collect samples for basic diagnostic tests.
The difficulty arises when patients need treatment from a specialist. Cases involving skin problems, bone and joint conditions, gynaecological issues or ear, nose and throat complaints are often sent to larger hospitals. This adds to the heavy outpatient load at institutions such as NIMS, TIMS, Gandhi Hospital and Osmania General Hospital.
The new polyclinics are intended to address that gap. General physicians will work alongside specialists, with services expected in areas including dermatology, orthopaedics, ENT and gynaecology. Officials are planning outpatient consultations from Monday to Saturday, with two or three specialists available each day.
Patients who require advanced investigations, surgery or specialised treatment can still be referred to major government hospitals. The proposed system is also expected to make such referrals more organised, with priority arrangements being considered for cases sent through the polyclinics.
Early detection is another important part of the plan. Screening services will help identify certain diseases before they become more serious. Officials are particularly looking at screening for breast and cervical cancer among women.
The government expects the network to make specialist healthcare easier to access without requiring every patient to immediately visit a major hospital. For residents in densely populated localities, having multiple medical services available closer to home could also reduce travel and waiting time.
With 145 centres planned and 40 already prepared, the next step will be to begin services in the completed locations and gradually bring the remaining polyclinics into operation.
