Hussain Sagar Revival Plan: HMDA Plans Major Revival of Hussain Sagar Lakefront

HMDA is preparing a comprehensive master plan to restore Hussain Sagar, improve water quality, upgrade public spaces and transform the lakefront into a modern environmental and tourism destination.

Hussain Sagar Revival Plan: Hyderabad’s Hussain Sagar could soon get a major makeover as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) works on a comprehensive plan to restore the lake and improve its surroundings.

The proposed project will focus first on tackling pollution. Officials are looking at strengthening sewage treatment facilities and preventing untreated wastewater from reaching the lake through various drains. Additional diversion pipelines and better environmental management are also expected to form part of the plan.

HMDA is preparing to invite tenders to select a consultancy for developing the master plan. The proposed work is expected to cover both environmental restoration and improvements to the lakefront, with the aim of making the area more attractive for residents and visitors.

The redevelopment will also focus on public spaces around the lake. Cycling tracks, walking paths, yoga zones, landscaped areas and dedicated spaces for cultural activities are among the facilities being considered. Food courts and open plazas could also be developed to make the lakefront more comfortable for people spending time there.

Sanjeevaiah Park is another key part of the proposal. Officials are looking at developing new themed gardens and green spaces while also planning a learning centre. The centre could help children and students learn more about the environment, nature and Hyderabad’s history.

Several prominent locations around Hussain Sagar are expected to be connected through the broader beautification plan. Tank Bund, NTR Marg, PV Narasimha Rao Marg, Lumbini Park, People’s Plaza, the Ambedkar statue and the Martyrs Memorial area are among the places being considered.

The redevelopment is not limited to greenery and walkways. Traffic movement and visitor facilities are also expected to receive attention, with plans for better road connectivity and additional parking arrangements in areas that attract large crowds.

Lumbini Park and NTR Gardens are also likely to receive a fresh look. The laser show at Lumbini Park, which has been a popular attraction, is expected to be redesigned with new themes and improved presentation.

If the proposed measures are implemented as planned, Hussain Sagar could see a significant change in both its environmental condition and visitor experience. The larger goal is to turn the lakefront into a cleaner, greener and more engaging public destination for Hyderabad.
