Former Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal Sentenced to Ten Years in Sexual Assault Case

Former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal has been sentenced to ten years in prison after being convicted in the 2013 sexual assault case involving a junior colleague. The Bombay High Court Goa Bench also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh and directed him to surrender before the authorities within four weeks.

The case relates to an incident that allegedly took place during the Think Fest event in Goa in 2013. The complainant accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel elevator while both were attending the event. Following the complaint, he was arrested later that year before securing bail.

The legal proceedings witnessed several developments over the years. A trial court had acquitted Tejpal in 2021 after hearings that began in 2017. However, the Goa government challenged that verdict before the Bombay High Court Goa Bench, which overturned the acquittal, found him guilty and has now pronounced the sentence.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the prosecution, argued that the offence was serious and called for strict punishment. He maintained that the survivor had clearly expressed her refusal and stressed that such cases should send a strong message about respecting consent.

Tejpal appealed to the court for leniency, citing his age and family circumstances. He also informed the court that he intended to challenge the verdict through the legal process. The court, however, declined his request for a lighter sentence and confirmed the punishment.

The judgment marks the latest development in one of India’s most closely watched sexual assault cases, bringing a significant chapter of the long running legal battle to a close.
