Telangana Removes Over One Lakh Ration Cards to Strengthen Public Distribution System
Telangana has intensified ration card verification by removing ineligible beneficiaries while expanding support for eligible families through new card issuance and plans for smart digital ration cards.
The Telangana government has accelerated its efforts to improve the efficiency of the Public Distribution System by carrying out a large scale verification of ration card beneficiaries. The exercise is aimed at ensuring that welfare benefits reach only eligible households while eliminating irregularities from the system.
According to information presented in Parliament by the Union Government, a total of 104947 ration cards were cancelled in Telangana during 2025. The number represents a significant increase compared with the previous few years, reflecting a more intensive verification drive across the state.
Officials said the review focused on identifying duplicate cards, ineligible beneficiaries, cards linked to deceased individuals and families that had permanently migrated to other states. Data collected through Aadhaar linkage and electronic verification processes also helped authorities detect irregular entries requiring removal from the beneficiary database.
Alongside the verification exercise, the state government has continued issuing fresh ration cards to families found eligible after scrutiny. Thousands of applicants who had been waiting for approval have reportedly received new cards, allowing them to access food security benefits and other welfare schemes linked to the Public Distribution System.
The government is also preparing to introduce smart ration cards as part of its modernization plans. The proposed digital cards are expected to improve beneficiary verification, reduce duplication and simplify the management of records through enhanced security features and digital authentication.
To ensure uninterrupted food grain distribution during the expected impact of El Nino conditions, the government has introduced a special arrangement for beneficiaries. Eligible families are being provided rice for August, September and October together, enabling them to receive three months of food grain allocation in a single distribution cycle.
