The growing trend of taking selfies and filming social media videos near the sea is once again raising serious safety concerns after a recent incident highlighted the dangers of venturing too close to powerful waves. Despite repeated advisories from authorities, many visitors continue to ignore basic precautions in search of dramatic photographs and viral content.
The latest tragedy occurred during Friendship Day celebrations when a group of seven friends visited Pata Gangavaram Beach for an outing. While attempting to take photographs on a large rock formation near the shoreline, two members of the group were swept away after a powerful wave struck unexpectedly. Search efforts were launched following the incident.
Similar scenes continue to be witnessed at RK Beach, where tourists and youngsters frequently climb slippery rocks to capture selfies and record short videos. Many stand only a few feet away from crashing waves, often overlooking the risks posed by sudden surges and unstable surfaces.
Officials have repeatedly appealed to beachgoers to avoid entering hazardous areas, particularly during rough sea conditions. However, safety warnings are often ignored, increasing the possibility of accidents and emergency rescue operations.
Visitors and local residents have also expressed concern over the lack of stronger preventive measures at several vulnerable locations. They have called for permanent barricades, prominent warning boards and stricter enforcement to prevent people from accessing dangerous rock formations along the coastline.
