Bhadrachalam Malkangiri Railway Project Planned for High Speed Rail Connectivity
The proposed Bhadrachalam Malkangiri railway project will feature high speed infrastructure without level crossings while creating a new strategic rail corridor connecting Telangana Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
A major railway infrastructure project is set to transform connectivity in eastern India with the proposed Pandurangapuram Bhadrachalam Malkangiri rail line. Designed to support train speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour, the new corridor will introduce modern railway standards while bringing Bhadrachalam onto the national railway map for the first time.
One of the standout features of the project is its completely grade separated design. The railway line will not have a single level crossing, allowing trains to operate safely at higher speeds. Plans include the construction of more than 300 bridges, 41 road over bridges and 66 road under bridges to ensure uninterrupted rail and road movement.
The Railway Ministry has estimated that around 843.9 hectares of land will be required across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha for the project. The acquisition will include government land, private property and forest areas. The total project cost has been estimated at approximately Rs 2864 crore, and the Centre has identified it as a special railway project.
The new corridor is expected to serve as an important alternative to the existing Warangal Vijayawada Visakhapatnam Bhubaneswar railway route. Once operational, it will ease congestion on the current network while improving the movement of passenger and freight trains across southern and eastern India.
The project is also expected to strengthen industrial logistics by enabling faster transportation of coal to thermal power plants and improving connectivity for aluminium and iron ore industries. Farmers in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are likely to benefit from quicker access to markets across different parts of the country through the enhanced rail network.
The railway line will begin at Pandurangapuram, cross the Godavari River through a major railway bridge near Bhadrachalam and continue through Andhra Pradesh before reaching Malkangiri in Odisha. The project has been planned with a five year completion target. Once completed, it will provide direct rail access to the famous Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy Temple in Bhadrachalam, making travel more convenient for thousands of pilgrims every year.
