India Post Introduces New Speed Post Rules With Separate Categories for Documents and Parcels

India Post has announced a major update to its Speed Post services that will take effect from August 1. For the first time, the postal department has officially defined what qualifies as a document and what will be treated as a parcel. The move is expected to bring greater clarity to customers while streamlining postal operations.

Under the new guidelines, letters, printed materials and complimentary items with no resale value will be classified as documents. These shipments will continue to attract lower postal charges, while all other items will be processed under the parcel category. Along with the revised classification, India Post has also released updated premium Speed Post tariffs for both retail and wholesale customers.

The document category will include several important banking and identity related items. Welcome kits issued by banks and financial institutions, passbooks, cheque books, bank statements, plastic cards, debit cards, credit cards, PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, voter identity cards, passports and driving licences will all be treated as documents. Non commercial Rakhi covers, greeting cards and packets weighing up to 500 grams will also fall under this category. Any item outside these definitions will be considered a parcel.

Retail customers will not see any change in the existing Speed Post charges. However, India Post has introduced fresh pricing for bulk bookings under the document category. From August 1, charges for the 24 Speed Post service will range from ₹38 to ₹186 per packet depending on the destination and weight.

For packets weighing up to 50 grams, the local postal charge will remain ₹38, while sending the same packet anywhere in the country will cost ₹94, excluding applicable GST. Packets weighing between 51 and 250 grams will be charged between ₹118 and ₹154. For items weighing from 251 to 500 grams, the applicable fee will range from ₹140 to ₹186 per packet.

Wholesale customers will also see revised pricing. The 24 Speed Post service will cost between ₹38 and ₹100, while the 48 Speed Post service will be priced between ₹48 and ₹72 depending on the shipment. Retail customers using the 48 Speed Post option will pay between ₹61 and ₹121 based on the weight and delivery distance.

At present, the premium 24 hour and 48 hour Speed Post services are available only in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. India Post expects the revised classifications and pricing structure to simplify the booking process and provide a clearer distinction between document and parcel deliveries for customers across these major service centres.
