Google Introduces Selfie Video Feature for Easier Account Sign In and Recovery

Google has rolled out a new optional selfie video verification feature to make signing in and recovering Google accounts more secure. The feature is designed to help users regain access when they forget their password or cannot use their registered recovery phone number or email address.

The new verification method serves as an additional recovery option rather than replacing existing security tools. Users can still rely on passkeys and one time passwords for account recovery, while the selfie video feature provides another layer of identity verification.

To enable the feature, users need to open the Security and Sign in section of their Google Account settings and select the Selfie Video option. During setup, they are asked to look into the device camera and follow guided instructions by turning their head in different directions. Google then securely stores this recording as a reference video for future verification.

Whenever users face difficulties signing in, they can choose the Sign in with Selfie Video option. They must record a live selfie video by following the on screen instructions. Google compares the new recording with the securely stored reference video to confirm the user’s identity before granting access to the account.

The company says the reference video is encrypted and securely stored to protect user privacy. Users also have complete control over the feature and can delete the stored selfie video at any time through their Google Account settings.

To prevent fraud, Google requires live facial movements during verification. This makes it much harder for attackers to use artificial intelligence generated images or deepfake videos to gain unauthorized access to an account.

Google has also clarified that the feature is not available for Google Workspace accounts, child accounts, or accounts enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program. The selfie video option is currently offered only for eligible personal Google accounts as an additional security measure.
