The resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has sent ripples across India’s political and academic landscape. On July 25, 2026, Pradhan submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging the mounting anger among students after the NEET-UG paper leak scandal. He emphasized that his decision was rooted in protecting the future of millions of young aspirants rather than personal prestige.
In his letter, Pradhan recalled his decades-long commitment to education reforms and highlighted the government’s swift response once irregularities surfaced. The NEET exam was canceled, a re-exam was ordered, and a CBI investigation was launched. He also noted that from next year, the exam would shift to computer-based testing to curb malpractice.
The protests, however, had already gained momentum. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), born out of frustration with systemic failures, spearheaded demonstrations alongside activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose 26-day hunger strike galvanized nationwide support. The “Chalo Sansad” march and clashes with police further intensified the movement, forcing the government into negotiations.
Pradhan admitted that misleading statements from individuals in positions of responsibility during the re-exam results deeply disturbed him. He stressed that no talented student should suffer due to exam mafias and reiterated his gratitude to Modi for the trust placed in him. His resignation, he said, was meant to ensure students could focus on studies without political distractions.
Meanwhile, the government promised strict action against those behind the leak, fast-track courts for pending cases, and tougher laws to prevent future breaches. Student groups demanded compensation for families of victims and assurances that no legal action would be taken against protestors. While some demands were met, the insistence on Pradhan’s resignation ultimately sealed his exit.
This episode marks a rare retreat for the Modi government, underscoring the power of student voices in shaping national policy.
