Eight Dead After Landslide Blocks Under Construction Tunnel in Sikkim

A devastating landslide at a tunnel construction site in Sikkim’s Namchi district has claimed the lives of eight people after debris completely blocked the tunnel entrance. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to reach those believed to be trapped inside despite dangerous conditions.

The incident occurred at the Samardang construction site, where a large section of the hillside suddenly collapsed, sealing access to the tunnel. Emergency personnel rushed to the location soon after the accident and began search and rescue operations.

Officials said the rescue mission has become extremely challenging because methane gas is leaking from underground layers exposed by the landslide. The presence of the gas has forced responders to proceed cautiously, as several rescue workers reportedly experienced breathing difficulties and some briefly lost consciousness while working near the tunnel.

Authorities believe the gas is naturally escaping through disturbed underground geological formations following the collapse. Special safety measures are being adopted to protect rescue personnel as operations continue.

The exact number of people still trapped inside the tunnel has not yet been officially confirmed. Rescue teams are using specialised equipment while closely monitoring gas levels to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the operation.

Officials have assured that every possible effort is being made to locate and evacuate those inside the tunnel as quickly as conditions allow.
