The South Indian film industry is mourning the reported passing of legendary playback singer S Janaki. According to the report, she died after suffering a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment at a hospital in Mysuru. She had been facing age related health complications for some time.
People close to the singer also shared that she had been emotionally affected in recent days following the death of her grandson in the United States. They said the personal loss had deeply saddened the veteran artist.
Born in 1938 in Repalle of Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district, Shishtla Sriramamurthy Janaki became one of the most celebrated voices in Indian cinema. Fondly known as Janakamma, Gana Kokila, and the Nightingale of South India, she built a remarkable career that lasted from 1957 to 2019.
Although Telugu was her mother tongue, S Janaki earned immense popularity by singing in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and several other Indian languages. Her unforgettable voice touched millions of listeners and became an integral part of countless classic films.
Throughout her career, she received numerous prestigious honours for her contribution to music, including 12 Nandi Awards. Her extraordinary talent and dedication made her one of the most respected playback singers in Indian cinema.
Interestingly, false rumours about her death had circulated in 2020. At that time, S Janaki responded with grace, saying she was healthy and joking that she had already been declared dead several times. The news of her reported passing now has left music lovers and the film fraternity heartbroken, as they remember an artist whose songs will continue to live on for generations.
