India will commission INS Mahendragiri on July 11 in Visakhapatnam, strengthening naval capabilities with indigenous technology, advanced stealth features, modern missile systems, and enhanced operational readiness across the Indo Pacific region.
INS Mahendragiri Joins Navy: The Indian Navy is preparing to induct another advanced indigenous warship as INS Mahendragiri is set to be officially commissioned in Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2026. The stealth frigate will become part of the Eastern Naval Command, further strengthening India’s maritime defence capabilities in the region.
Built under the prestigious Project 17A programme, INS Mahendragiri is the sixth stealth frigate in a planned fleet of seven next generation warships. The project represents one of India’s most ambitious indigenous naval construction initiatives aimed at modernising the country’s naval forces with advanced technology and homegrown expertise.
The warship has been constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, while the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau developed its design using high quality engineering standards. Named after the famous Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, the vessel reflects strength, resilience, and operational excellence.
More than 75 percent of the equipment installed on INS Mahendragiri has been sourced from within India, making it a strong example of the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. The vessel is equipped with advanced stealth capabilities designed to reduce radar detection and carries powerful weapon systems including BrahMos and Barak 8 missiles along with sophisticated anti submarine warfare technology.
The induction of INS Mahendragiri comes shortly after the commissioning of INS Dunagiri, highlighting the steady progress of Project 17A. Meanwhile, the seventh and final frigate of the series, INS Vindhyagiri, is currently under construction at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata.
According to the Defence Ministry, the arrival of these advanced stealth frigates will significantly improve the Indian Navy’s operational strength. The new warships are expected to play a vital role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests and supporting strategic operations across the Indo Pacific region.
