Lucknow Fire Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 18 in Devastating Lucknow Commercial Building Fire

A major fire in a Lucknow commercial building claimed 18 lives, left several injured, triggered rescue operations, and prompted compensation announcements and a high level investigation.

Lucknow Fire Tragedy: A tragic fire accident in Lucknow has claimed 18 lives, with several others continuing to receive treatment in hospitals for serious injuries. The incident occurred in the Aliganj area and has shocked residents across the city.

Following the disaster, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath immediately cancelled his scheduled engagements and rushed to the accident site. After meeting victims and reviewing rescue efforts, he announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 for the injured. He also instructed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for all survivors.

The fire broke out during the afternoon inside a graphics and animation coaching centre located in a three storey commercial building on Usha Mehta Marg. The building also housed a library and a gaming zone. Within minutes, thick smoke spread throughout the structure, trapping many people inside and creating panic among students and visitors.

As conditions worsened, some students reportedly jumped from upper floors in desperate attempts to escape. Firefighters rushed to the scene and carried out an extensive rescue operation. After several hours of effort, emergency teams managed to bring the blaze under control and evacuate those trapped inside.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced ex gratia assistance from the Prime Minister National Relief Fund. Families of the deceased will receive Rs 2 lakh each, while injured victims will be provided Rs 50,000 each.

The state government has ordered a high level probe into the incident. A Special Investigation Team has been formed and directed to submit a detailed report within seven days. Authorities have also registered a case and arrested four individuals, including building owners, in connection with the tragedy.

In a further development, action has been taken against officials accused of negligence. The government suspended four officers as part of its initial response while investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the deadly fire.
