Su 57 Fighter Jet: Russia Offers Joint Development of Su 57 Stealth Fighter Jet With India

Su 57 Fighter Jet: Russia has expressed interest in deepening defence cooperation with India by proposing the joint development and production of its advanced Su 57 stealth fighter aircraft. The proposal has drawn attention to the capabilities of the aircraft, which is considered Russia’s most advanced fifth generation combat jet currently in service.

The Su 57 was developed to compete with leading American fighter aircraft such as the F 22 Raptor and F 35 Lightning II. Designed as a multirole combat platform, the aircraft can perform air superiority missions as well as precision strikes against ground targets. It officially entered service with the Russian military in 2020.

One of the biggest strengths of the Su 57 is its combination of speed and stealth. The aircraft can reach a maximum speed of Mach 2.0, or nearly 2,458 kilometres per hour, making it one of the fastest stealth fighters in operation today. It can also sustain supersonic flight at around Mach 1.3 without using afterburners, improving fuel efficiency and reducing detection risks.

The fighter is powered by two Saturn AL 41F1 engines, while Russia is also developing a more advanced AL 51F1 engine for future upgrades. Unlike the F 35, which relies on a single engine, the twin engine design provides additional power and operational flexibility.

The Su 57 features sophisticated radar and sensor systems that enhance battlefield awareness and target tracking. Its stealth design helps it avoid detection by advanced air defence networks, allowing it to operate effectively in contested environments.

Another advantage is its combat range. The aircraft can travel approximately 1,900 kilometres on a single fuel load, significantly higher than the operational range often associated with the F 35. The jet is also capable of carrying weapons both internally and externally depending on mission requirements.

Cost is another factor that makes the Su 57 attractive. Estimates suggest each aircraft costs between 35 million and 50 million dollars, considerably lower than many Western fifth generation fighter jets. Defence analysts believe this combination of capability and affordability could make it a strong option for future international partnerships.
